Living through a Kitchen Remodel is a TALL order for anyone. Don't make it harder on yourself than it already will be. Here are some tips you can use to live through your kitchen remodel!

5 Tips For Living Without a Kitchen

Living without a kitchen is absolutely the worst part of living in a kitchen remodel. Here are 5 Tips for living without a kitchen.

1. Create a Temporary Kitchen in Advance

This tip may seem obvious but it is an all-too-often overlooked mistake that will drive anybody crazy. Without a temporary kitchen setup in advance, you're going to be forced to eat out or get delivery for each meal; even more complicated when feeding a family. 

Ideally you can get your hands on a table and spot in another room to load up with a microwave, toaster oven, hot plate, coffee maker, cutting board, and crock pot. Be sure to leave some counter space to cut and prepare food.

2. Set Aside the Right Cookware

You'll still need access to everything you use in your kitchen, even if you don't have a kitchen. Use storage bins to set aside Cooking utensils, pots ands pans, plastic wrap, foil, garbage bags, and soap. 

Keeping extra food storage containers free for leftovers is a great idea. You'll be using the microwave a lot for the time being. 

3. It's Okay to Embrace Disposable Utensils

With your dish washer out of order and limited sink access, cleaning dishes may not be much of an option for a time. So, embrace the simplicity of disposable utensils.

Avoid the head ache of cleaning out food from a sink that wasn't meant to handle it in the first place, and just use disposables. There are many eco-friendly options these days as well!

4. Ready to Eat Snacks + Meal Prep

Take your time to stock your pantry with easy to eat items like canned goods, cereals, dry soups, fruit, dried goods, etc. You won't have the luxury of preparing food easily in your kitchen, so quick access snacks are essential to any kitchen remodel.

Meal prepping can be a great way to continue getting some delicious home cooked meals throughout the week, without breaking your back to make it work over a hot plate and microwave.

5. Freeze in Advance or Eat Out

If you don't meal prep in advance you're going to have a difficult time preparing meals with a limited kitchen. So be ready to eat out frequently, or use a friends home to cook. 

Freezing large meals, that are easy to warm, in advance is a great way to cut costs and keep things healthier for you and your family. In addition to saving time having to go out for food each meal. 

5 Tips For Living in the Mess

Unfortunately, you won't just be dealing with life without a kitchen, you'll also be forced to live in a construction space. Which means dust, noise, safety hazards, and messes.

Here are 5 Tips for Living in the Mess.

1. Create a Storage Area For Construction Material

Identify and clear out an area in your home or garage, somewhere out of the way but convenient enough access to not disturb your living quarters, to put your materials. Your cabinets, flooring, countertops, etc.

This will help keep things organized, avoid interruptions, and maintain a level of privacy for you and your family.

2. Be Ready to Control the Dust

Dust gets everywhere. It's almost impossible to keep out and it can make your life in a remodel miserable if left unchecked. 

Do your best to seal off doorways to the construction areas using plastic sheets and tape. Do your best to keeps these access points closed. Although it will be impossible to completely seal your area, these types of efforts WILL make a big difference.

3. Clear Out the Work Area

To avoid any unintended damage to artwork, plants, appliances, etc. it's always a good idea to remove anything that you don't want damaged to another area of your home for safe keeping. This will also allow the construction crew to move about more freely, without fear of damaging something.

4. Keep your Pets and a Kids Safe

Pets and kids are unpredictable and almost always find a way to cause trouble, or worse, get hurt. 

Keep doors to construction areas locked and/or blocked off whenever possible. Avoid accidents by keeping them away from the tools, materials, and work areas.

5. Noise control

Noise Control is going to be virtually impossible as well. It's just something you'll be forced to deal with at certain times. We recommend getting a large box of ear plugs to use when the noise becomes irritating.

If that's not enough, get some noise cancelling head phones with some calming mediation music and you might be able to get an extra hour or two of sleep!
